Humane Hoax: The Myth of Happy Meat

Humane Hoax: The Myth of Happy Meat

We now see labels like cage-free eggs, family-farmed dairy, and grass-fed meat. But what do the labels really mean? Is free-range better for the environment? Is organic more humane?

To answer these questions, author and activist Hope Bohanec will discuss her new edited volume “The Humane Hoax: Essays Exposing the Myth of Happy Meat, Humane Dairy, and Ethical Eggs.” Hope will examine the new trend of humanewashing and greenwashing in animal product marketing—and what we can do to combat it.

ABOUT HOPE:

Hope Bohanec has been active in animal protection and environmental activism for over 30 years. She is the Executive Director of Compassionate Living and the host of the Hope for the Animals Podcast. Hope co-founded the Humane Hoax Project, the Ahimsa Living Project and has organized hundreds of online and in-person events including the Humane Hoax Online Conference, the Humane Hoax Chicken Webinar, and the Sonoma County VegFest.

Hope has also published two books on the subject of humanewashing and greenwashing: “The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat?” and “The Humane Hoax: Essays Exposing the Myth of Happy Meat, Humane Dairy, and Ethical Eggs.” Over the last three decades, she has worked for the national nonprofits United Poultry Concerns and In Defense of Animals as well as contributed chapters to two anthologies.

ABOUT HOPE’S BOOK:

“The Humane Hoax: Essays Exposing the Myth of Happy Meat, Humane Dairy, and Ethical Eggs” is a new volume that explores the timely topics of humanewashing, greenwashing, animal product marketing, language, and labels. Eighteen contributing authors expose how so-called alternative animal agriculture intersects with feminism, affects the environment, is represented in the media, and impacts human and non-human communities alike. This anthology has essays from noted animal and environmental advocates including Carol Adams, Karen Davis, Alastor Van Kleeck, Sailesh Rao, John Sanbonmatsu, and Christopher Soul Eubanks. All proceeds of the sale of the book go to Compassionate Living.

Join us for a spellbinding presentation featuring Hope Bohanec, one of the deftest minds to ever critique the “humane meat” movement!

Species Extinction Summit
Nov

Species Extinction Summit

We are facing the worst mass extinction event in over 65 million years. Dozens of species go extinct every single day, roughly 1,000-10,000 times the background extinction rate of just 1-5 species per year. 1-2 acres of Amazon rainforest are destroyed every second, and 30-50% of all species on Earth could face extinction by 2050.

Yet one industry, and one industry alone, emerges as a key culprit behind the sixth mass extinction of all life on Earth: animal agriculture. Animal agriculture is responsible for 71-91% of Amazon rainforest destruction, occupies 45% of Earth’s ice-free land, and accounts for more greenhouse gas pollution than every car, truck, plane, train, and every other mode of transportation on Earth combined.

Join us for our first annual Species Extinction Summit as we not only appraise the stark reality before us, but also discuss our most effective means for preventing runaway species extinction—before it is too late and complete ecosystem collapse and profound social disruption become inevitable.

St. Louis Climate Strike: Gateway to a Green New Deal!

The climate crisis continues to rapidly intensify, and we have precious little time in which to avert complete ecological collapse. What we do over the next few years, in particular, will have a profound impact on our future and the world our children inherit.

Fortunately, there is a revolutionary piece of legislation that, if passed, would mandate the greatest mobilization of resources since WWII in addressing the most pressing existential threat of our generation. What is this piece of legislation? The Green New Deal.

This historic piece of legislation, however, has met staunch resistance from the Republican and Democratic establishment. A mass movement, therefore, is crucial to building the pressure necessary to goad elected officials into supporting and passing the Green New Deal.

Join us as we flex the growing might of the worldwide movement for environmental justice. Join us as we fight to make St. Louis a gateway to the Green New Deal!

The industrialization that has occurred in the oceans over the last century mirrors the events that triggered mass extinctions on land. Industrial scale fishing, habitat destruction, species loss, and pollution have placed the ocean in peril. The very nature of the sea is being irretrievably altered. BLUE is a provocative journey into the ocean realm, witnessing this critical moment in time when the marine world is on a precipice. Our ocean has been the guardian of life on Earth. Now it is our turn to be guardians for the ocean.

NYE Firework Boycott!

NYE Firework Boycott!

Fireworks cause enormous harm to animals, both wild and domestic. They also damage the environment, aggravate asthma, and trigger PTSD. Join us this New Year’s Eve as we boycott fireworks by:

  1. Refusing to purchase and shoot off fireworks

  2. Sharing this pledge with others

WHY? For all their glamor, fireworks terrify countless animals, both wild and domestic, each 4th of July in the US. Millions of animals spend hours scrambling in terror as massive booms reverberate around them, and many die from sudden cardiac arrest as a result of dangerously high heart rates and sheer fright.

Untold thousands of animals die as a result of fireworks, including dogs, who are known to suffer enormously. Their hypersensitive hearing often makes the sound of firework blasts overwhelming, and many panic, desperately trying to find somewhere to hide from the thunderous booms of nearby fireworks. It is estimated that 1 in 2 dogs suffer serious adverse reactions when exposed to the deafening sound of firework blasts. In fact, dogs have been known to rip off their paw pads by frantically trying to escape the anxiety-inducing blasts of nearby fireworks; others die from heart attacks and stress, in rare cases even impaling themselves on fences from which they cannot escape.

Fireworks also disturb wildlife, causing many mother birds to flee from their nests to escape the unbearable cacophony of firework blasts; many of these mother birds fly away so hectically and become so disoriented from firework blasts that they cannot relocate their nests, leaving their babies to die of exposure. Rodents often spend hours running around in absolute terror, even hours after the firework blasts have stopped, and countless other animals suffer as well.

“A Prayer for Compassion” Screening

Join us for our final meeting of the year as we screen “A Prayer for Compassion,” an interfaith documentary that builds the case for compassion from a variety of religious perspectives!

ABOUT:

“A Prayer for Compassion” is a feature-length documentary that strives to inspire and encourage those already on a religious or spiritual path to expand their circle of compassion to embrace all life, regardless of species, and make choices in alignment with this value.

The film follows Thomas Jackson on a quest across America that ultimately takes him to Morocco for the UN Climate Conference and throughout the Indian subcontinent to ask the question, “Can compassion grow to include all beings, and can people who identify as religious or spiritual come to embrace the call to include all human and nonhuman beings in our circle of respect and caring and love?”

Drawing on traditions including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, the Native American tradition, Unitarian Universalism, Zoroastrianism, and the “spiritual but not religious” point of view, “A Prayer for Compassion” calls on people of faith and spiritual seekers of every stripe to come together to bring about a world in which “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together.”

Worldwide COVID-19 Vigil
Nov
1

Worldwide COVID-19 Vigil

COVID-19 has become the eighth worst pandemic in human history, killing over 4.5 million people. Roughly 1 in 500 Americans have died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it continues to rage thanks to the highly transmissible Delta variant, insufficient vaccination rates, and the hoarding of vaccines by wealthy countries.

This World Vegan Day, we will commemorate the millions of people who have died as a result of a disease that was likely preventable; if humanity didn’t have such a penchant for eating the dead body parts of murdered animals, COVID-19 and its profound social, political, and economic fallout may never have happened.

In fact, we could prevent roughly 75% of emerging pathogens simply by no longer raising and killing over 70 billion land animals for food each year. If we continue confining, exploiting, and eating animals, the end result is dire; eventually, a new superbug will surface that is both highly transmissible and many times more lethal than COVID-19 (picture a superbug as transmissible as the common cold but as deadly as Ebola).

Unless we take drastic action, we are doomed to a never-ending cycle of often entirely preventable pandemics. If you would like to organize a COVID-19 vigil in your area or receive updates about this global campaign, please complete the following form: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/_UpkWSH1QEVDtT_hiOPl0w
